Earlier, I said Brokeback was not playing in Clermont County. I stand corrected. It's playing in Milford. Take note, Jean Schmidt.
The Wall Street Journal had an interesting article about Brokeback and the way it was released. Brokeback had a limited release in specific places in New York and LA in an effort to attract specific audiences. They didn't want it to be classified as an art film or a gay film, so they targeted the affluent and women.
While they didn't avoid the gay market, they made an attempt to include others. As a result, women have been a viable demographic, which has lead to a switchover to more heterosexual men seeing the movie in more recent weeks.
Considering BBM is a movie many absolutely refuse to see, and many are afraid to see, the fact it was ranked #5 as of the end of last week is remarkable.
I've seen the move 3 times. The second time was such a debacle I got free passes from the Esquire to come back and see it again without interruption. While the late-night crowds were small, I was impressed by the mix of people who came to see the movie.

We worked together at PILS and then he went there. Yes, it is the Esquire in Clifton. I like going to movies there, but I had one bad experience that had nothing to do with technical difficulties.
I saw the 12:15 AM showing of BBM. Across the hall was the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Throughout the entire movie the cast members stood out in the hallway and talked. When the their movie ended, it was a circus. It was pretty bad - so bad that I got up at one point in time to remind one young man that a movie was playing across the hall. So I complained and got free passes.
That is a cool cinema though, the retro ambiance feels like a time warp. Whenever I went there I half expected to see cars from the 1940s out on Ludlow when I came out...
The Esquire in Clifton has seats so close together that you may as well be part of the movie.
Back when I was doing movie reviews, I saw Napoleon Dynamite at the Esquire. I was with the Dude and Puddin from WEBN. Now, if anyone knows who the Dude and Puddin are, let me say that none of these guys are small. Pudding is 400+. Very not good.
